Virgin completes first biofuels flight

Richard Branson‘s Virgin Atlantic has completed the world’s first commercial flight powered by biofuel.

The flight, which took off from Heathrow, landed in Amsterdam earlier today.

Although the breakthrough aims to alay growing concerns about the environmental impact of flying it has not been without controversy.

Critics say biofuels are not sustainable since they use up increasingly scarce land required for food.

The biofuel was made from oils extracted from a mixture of babassu nuts and coconuts which Virgin claimed did not compete with staple food sources since they came from existing mature plantations.

The flight was only part-powered by biofuel on one of its four engines
