Waiting for spring barley to ripen in Peterhead

The combine was sidelined at Doug Fowlie’s Milhill Farm, Longside, Peterhead, today (September 7), waiting for the spring barley to ripen.

He had 61ha (150 acres) of Oxbridge to cut, as well as 61ha (150 acres) of Robigus winter wheat. “We have cut one field of the wheat and it was quite diseased,” he said. “But I’m happier with the results than I had expected.” It yielded 8t/ha (3.25t/acre) and he expected the rest to be better.

He had also cut one field of the Oxbridge spring barley, which had yielded about 6.8t/ha (2.75t/acre) at 1.8% nitrogen. The Optic came in at 6.1t/ha (2.45t/acre) and 1.7% nitrogen.

“We’re fairly behind the last three or four years, when we finished harvest in August,” he said. “It will be September 15 before we finish, which would be about average over the longer term.”
