Weather won’t dampen Chris Hewis’s spirits

The forecast rain has failed to materialise at Chris Hewis’s farm at Habrough, Lincs, enabling him to continue combining his Flagon winter barley.

“It’s yielding very well, at above 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), which is 30% up on last year,” he said. The 20ha (50 acres) cut so far was coming off at 13.5% moisture, leaving 28ha (70 acres) more to combine.

Mr Hewis had also harvested 21ha (52 acres) of Excalibur oilseed rape, which was disappointing as expected, due to a late frost during flowering, and infection with Sclerotinia. It had yielded 3.2t/ha (1.3t/acre), but the remaining 22ha (55 acres) looked a lot better, he added.

After that would come 18ha (45 acres) of late-drilled Tipple spring barley and 51ha (125 acres) of Cocktail, both of which looked well. The 81ha (200 acres) of Gladiator and Einstein wheat looked fantastic, but would be a good fortnight away, said Mr Hewis.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
