Welsh harvest going well

NFU Vice President Meurig Raymond said harvest is going “extremely well” in Haverford West, Wales. Cocktail spring barley yielded very similar to last year at 6.5 – 7t/ha. Bushel weights are good and he expects to finish cutting tomorrow (August 19).

Winter oilseed rape yields are down on last year. With deeper soils yielding better, he said it is definitely due to drought stress caused by dry weather in July.

Mr Raymond said it has been a very easy harvest and it is a great relief to have avoided drying costs. Straw quality is very good, and he expects to wrap up 200ha of winter wheat in 10 days.
