Wet soils slow progress in Shropshire

Sandy Walker of Ercall Park, High Ercall, Telford was harvesting his 14ha (35 acres) of potatoes when FWi called. He was surprised to find them “coming out of the ground nicely”.

Mr Walker had been struggling to get onto his wet land and said combining was a case of where he could gain access. So far he had cut 36ha (90 acres) of Castille and Lioness oilseed rape, and still had 12ha (30 acres) left on fields too wet to travel on.

Currently he was trying to cut as much of the 40ha (100 acres) of Saffron winter barley as possible and had managed to finish off 60ha (150 acres) of Carat winter barley.

He was uncertain of yields and quality and thought it was a little like stepping into the unknown.

Mr Walker said progress was behind normal this year, although he remained optimistic given the better weather forecast, “One week could make a big difference and prices are good, which helps a bit.”
