Wheat bulb fly hatch begins

Wheat bulb fly (PDF) egg hatch is now under way at monitoring sites in the east and north of England, ADAS reports in its latest crop action bulletin.

The overall mean percentage egg hatch is 14%, compared with about 16% at this time last year.

Egg hatch sprays should be applied to high-risk fields as soon as conditions allow, but remember the activity of chlorpyrifos is reduced in organic soil and if soil temperatures are below 5C.

To date there have been no confirmed cases of damage or shoot invasion by wheat bulb fly larvae.
