Wheat quality holds up as harvest nears end in Kent

Harvest is nearly completed in Kent, although some crops have been affected by the rain, according to farmer and contractor Mike Wilkinson.

“We finished our own harvest on August 10, which is early for us,” he said. “Most people seem to be getting near to finishing but there is still some wheat out in the area.”

Mr Wilkinson’s oilseed rape was badly affected by hail, and his wheat yields were almost 1t/ha (0.4t/acre) down at less than 10t/ha (4t/acre).

Quality of the Xi 19, Robigus and Einstein was good as it was harvested before the rain. “Protein is reasonable and Hagbergs are super.”

Next on the list were potatoes, which were “sitting in the ground wet, waiting to be lifted”.

Crop: Winter wheat
Varieties: Xi 19 Robigus and Einstein
Yield: <10t/ha (4t/acre)
