Wheat remaining to be cut in Shropshire

Shropshire grower Sandy Walker still had 24ha (60acres) of winter wheat remaining at High Ercall, Telford. He said quality should be fine, considering it was all feed wheat, but just needed it to stop raining to get it in.

“Things have been going steady this year.”

He was disappointed with 160ha (400acres) of Claire and Robigus with yields below average.

“I’m not impressed with the wheats. Much of it was late drilled and so suffered in the wet autumn.”

Barley had been average this year, he said.

Mr Walker added: “We’re quite happy with the drilling at the moment. It’s probably on a par with last year but we could do with some more rain to make it easier.”
