Will Howe makes an early start on the harvest

Harvest is still some 10 days away at Will Howe’s Ewerby Thorpe Farm, Sleaford, Lincs, making harvest about 10 days behind normal.

“Everyone in this little area is in the same boat – although those on the lighter land have made a start,” he said. Mr Howe had swathed about a third of the 121ha (300 acres) of Castille and Excalibur oilseed rape, and he planned to spray off the rest.

That would be followed by 162ha (400 acres) of Claire, Gladiator and Robigus winter wheat and 49ha (120 acres) of Wizard beans. “The wheat’s looking good but it’s going to be later than normal, and the beans are going flat – other than that they look fine,” he said.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
