Winter wheat in Shropshire yields less than expected

It was too wet to combine at Willow Paddocks farm today, so Andrew Digwood of Bridgnorth, Shropshire was busy lifting 80ha (200 acres) of potatoes.

“Yields and quality are OK,” he said, “but were suffering with the wet ground conditions.”

Mr Digwood was pleased to have cut 40ha (100 acres) of Claire winter wheat at 14% moisture, yielding 9.4t/ha (3.75 t/acre).

He had 16ha (40 acres) of Einstein which he finished at 14% moisture. It yielded 7.25 t/ha (2.9 t/acre).

His 20ha (50acres) of Robigus was expected to yield similar to Claire also at 14% moisture.

He expected to finish the last of his wheat within a day. He hoped to restart in the middle of next week. The crop wasn’t ready and the forecast was for showers over the weekend.

He was happy to have finished 20ha (50 acres) of Gerald oats though,“they could have done better, “He said.
