Yields mixed for Lincolnshire grower
Lincolnshire grower Anthony Fixter said yields were varied at Bridge Farm, Boston, with “good and bad bits”. He finished harvest last Thursday (August 31).
Winter wheat yields were from 6.9t/ha (2.75t/acre), up to 10t/ha (4t/acre). This year he grew 60ha (150acres) of Einstein and Zebedee, and planned to grow the same varieties next year. “Zebedee impressed us.”
Quality had been good. “We were fortunate to get the crop in before the weather broke.”
Peas had yielded slightly lower than he had hoped and winter oats did “quite well” this year.
Mr Fixter said apart from a couple of combine breakdowns there had been no real problems this year. “The actual physical crop all stood up well for combining, which was good.”
But he added: “I know one or two neighbours who have still got some wheat to cut – the quality is not good and the Hagbergs have gone completely.”
