Yorkshire barley very dry

Yorkshire farmer Andrew Middlewood had almost finished cutting Pearl winter barley on light land, and was expecting to start cutting on the heavier land by the end of the week.

He was unsure of yields because the crop was “all in a big heap” and too dry to measure: “It is very dry at 12% moisture.” He said the quality was not fantastic, but was getting better, and he hoped the crop would make malting.

Mr Middlewood said the crops were all “turning very quickly” in the heat wave, meaning harvest was a week ahead of last year. His greatest concern was for the quality of Cocktail spring barley which he hoped would meet malting spec.

Wheat on lighter land was suffering from the hot weather, but he said his crop would still not be ready until August. But a local merchant told him some wheat on poorer light land would be ready to cut in July.
