Former NFUS presidents to vote Yes to independence

Four former NFU Scotland presidents are set to announce their intention to vote “Yes” in the Scottish Independence referendum on 18 September.

John Cameron (Fife), John Kinnaird (Lothian), John Ross (Wigtownshire) and Jim Walker (Dumfriesshire) will outline their reasons for backing the independence cause at a press conference at Yes Scotland headquarters in Glasgow on Wednesday.

The four men who served during the 1980s-2000 held significant industry positions in the wake of their presidencies and their allegiances are a significant coup for the Yes campaign.

However their views would appear to be at odds with the majority opinion at NFU Scotland’s series of debates around the country. At most of the events farmers and landowners have expressed doubts about independence , largely because of the uncertainty over which currency will be available and how quickly the country could negotiate membership of the EU.
