140 miles by bike to celebrate 140 years of Poultry World

Most delegates to the Egg and Poultry Industry Conference (EPIC) will opt to travel by car this year, but Poultry World reporter Jake Davies is aiming to cycle there cross-country – literally – in just one day.

He will set off from Hyde Park Corner in central London on 30 October and ride 140 miles, one for every year that Poultry World has been in publication, to raise funds for the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

The route will see him riding out from the capital city along the A4, past Reading and through the North Wessex Downs. He will skirt around the edge of Bristol before crossing the Severn Bridge, entering his home country of Wales and heading to the Celtic Manor.

Jake said: “I wanted to celebrate Poultry World’s 140th birthday, challenge myself and raise some money for a great cause. This big bike ride to EPIC seemed a perfect way to do all three.

“The RNIB supports those losing or who have lost their sight, and research into preventing it.

“So far my training has involved mostly mental preparation, but I plan to get on a bike in the days before I set off and see if I can still balance upright. As the saying goes, you never forget how to ride a bicycle.”
