Russia’s ban on EU pork imports following reports of African swine fever in Lithuania and Poland could cause European prices to fall, BPEX says.
AHDB/BPEX market specialist manager Stephen Howarth said EU prices had dropped 5-10c in the past fortnight as extra pork hit the market.
The UK market impact was harder to predict as while the ban could increase the EU-UK price gap further, British prices had dropped a little since Christmas and supermarkets had shown no sign of switching to cheaper imported products, he said.
“How prices change depends on how long it looks like the Russians keep the ban in place. If it is a couple of months then most people will be able to stand that.”
