Essex farmer and NFU council member Guy Smith has clarified his thoughts on how a new voting system for the NFU presidential elections could be devised (News, 19 December).
“The point I was making that it is quite common for family businesses such as the one I am involved in, which pays one 1000 plus sub to the NFU, to have more than one individual who wants and merits a say in the running of the NFU,” he said.
“In my case me, my brother and my father would all like a vote each.
Under one member, one vote the three of us would get one vote between us.
Whereas a one man band paying a couple of hundred in subs would get one all to himself.
I do not see this as fair.
Hence my proposal for some sort of banding.”
