Organisers of British Food Fortnight say their message reached more consumers than ever before thanks to the support of major retailers and caterers.
The eighth British Food Fortnight took place from 19 September to 4 October 2009 and involved thousands of events across the country.
Alexia Robinson, organiser of the event, said: “The major retailers and caterers have almost unanimously given a high five for British food during this year’s British Food Fortnight.
“Why? They know that consumers don’t just want it, they are demanding it.”
Ms Robinson said more British food was consumed through the catering sector over the two weeks than ever before with eight of the largest food service organisations, led by ARAMARK, six of the biggest pub groups led by Young’s, all the chef associations, the Youth Hostel Association and Anchor Care Home putting British food on the menu.
All the major supermarkets also ran special British promotions during fortnight signifying the greatest support in the history of the event.
Other highlights included a national school cooking competition led by the BBC’s Hairy Biker celebrity chefs, a Harvest Swap Shop in St Paul’s Cathedral and a “Mash of the Day” menu in Wembley Stadium.
