Champion Copywood herd dominates Classic sale

The Holstein breed’s most consistent investors battled it out at the Breeders Summer Classic sale at Bristol where the Copywood herd’s Sara family dominated the trade which ran to 20,500gns.

The Copywood herd was being dispersed by Chepstow breeder Belinda Fox and most lots were from the Sara family.

The family traces back to Tocunn Lindy Sara, imported from Canada in 1994. She is the only cow to have bred two National Holstein Show champions and it was last year’s winner – Copywood KJ Sara – that earned the top call from Ian Williamson buying for his Wardle herd at Nantwich, Cheshire.

The 15 Sara lots averaged a remarkable £7994.

David Jones gave 16,000gns to add Copywood Terra Sara to the Arcadia herd he is running for Sheika Nora bint Isa Al Khalifa in Monmouthshire.

Terra Sara is a five-month-old calf out of an Excellent Prelude daughter of Lindy.

And Mr Jones was in again with a 10,000gns call to take Copywood Sept Sara Red – a December-born heifer calf out of the renowned Copywood Integrity Sara Red – a previous Royal Show and National Holstein Show champion sired by September Storm.

John Jordan of Broadheath, Worcester, sold the younger portion of his Ecstasy herd and saw the in-calf heifer Riverdane James Ghost make 13,000gns to Carmarthenshire breeders Tegwyn and Mary Davies’ Henllan herd.

She was AI’d in November to Erbacres Damion and was bred out of Riverdane Storm Ghost, the reserve champion at the 2005 Royal Show.

Wills Bros added more of the best to their expanding 1200-cow herd at Wadebridge, Cornwall.

They paid 8500gns for the 87-point Copywood Ingniter Sara- a two-year-old out of a Prelude dam.

Averages: 11 cows £5493, 11 calved heifers £3188, 17 served heifers £3350, 57 recently served and maiden heifers £2232 and five bulls £1281.
