Eight tips for a successful wind project
Any wind turbine, whether it be 11kW or 500kW in size, will be economically beneficial if positioned on the right site.
By following eight simple rules, farmers and landowners can make sure they find the right site for their wind project, says land agent Chesterton Humberts.
- A good wind speed of over 4.9m/sec can be viable
- Clean, non-dispersed wind with no turbulence
- Grid connection – three-phase is required for most wind energy projects over 10kW
- Short cabling route
- Relatively easy vehicular access for delivery and maintenance
- A set “distance buffer” from houses and linear habitat features, in accordance with government guidance
- A site next to a listed building, in a conservation area, or in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is likely to encounter difficulties when trying to obtain planning permission
- Outside any MoD or telecommunications aviation zone.
