Farmers urge shoppers to ‘save’ British bacon

Pig farmers are stepping up efforts to highlight the financial difficulties they are facing because of spiralling costs of production.

The National Pig Association is warning consumers that many producers are making a loss or being driven out of business by unaffordable feed prices.

It is urging consumers to buy British pork to help signal to retailers that British ham, bacon and sausages are products they want to see on the shelf.

“If supermarkets see a surge in demand for British product, they may be persuaded to pay our farmers the few extra pennies a kilo more they need to cover their soaring feed bills,” said NPA general manager Dr Zoe Davies.

The cost of feed ingredients such as wheat and soya meal has increased by 25% over the past few weeks.

Many of the country’s pig farmers are making significant losses of between £18-20 a pig .

The NPA is warning the high costs of feed may result in a notable decrease in the availability of British pork in shops and a rise in imports.

Farmers representing 10% of Britain’s weekly pig production said if they don’t see a fair price between now and Christmas they will have no choice but to quit.
