Ludlow market in Shropshire saw a smaller entry of finished cattle (293 in total) at its sale on bank holiday Monday (25 May), but there was still firm demand across the board, said auctioneers McCartneys.
Medium steers averaged 155.4p/kg lwt, with the best up to 175p/kg and heavy steers up to almost 180p/kg. Medium heifers did 151p/kg on average, with the best quality up to 173p/kg.
The sale followed similarly strong trade at last Friday’s (22 May) sale of over 600 store cattle. The overall average for steers was 166p/kg, while heifers averaged 163p/kg. There was particular interest in cows and calves, which averaged £949, up to £1310.
Meanwhile, there was “excellent lamb trade” at Monday’s auction. Standard weight lambs averaged over 208p/kg, up to 243p/kg. Hoggets averaged 169p/kg, up to 179p/kg.
