First calves born from Asda semen initiative

Sauvignon x South Devon calves born on Mike and Tom Powley’s farm in Yorkshire are the born from Asda and ABP’s Sauvignon subsidised semen initiative.

Semen from Sauvignon is still available at a discount rate. For more information contact the ABP Livestock Department on 0121 717 2550.

Asda offered a 62.5% discount to all its BeefLink farmers on semen from Limousin bull Sauvignon, which was previously only affordable to pedigree breeders.

And according to Mike Powley, Farmers Weekly 2005 Beef Farmer of the Year, the initiative has been a sound investment for the future. “We look forward to realising the genetic gains Sauvignon will bring – the cows have generally calved easily and unassisted.”

Jim Viggars, senior meat buyer at Asda, says, “When we launched our Sauvignon discount scheme we were clear about the benefits that could be gained from using his semen. Despite his size and muscling, he is an easy-calving bull producing vigorous calves at birth.”
