Fridays wins planning application

A plan to double chicken numbers at an egg production site in Kent has finally been approved by the local authority.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has told egg producer/packer Fridays it can go ahead with its development and expansion plan at its site in Cranbrook.

The company can now demolish eight out of its 11 existing egg-laying barns and replace them with three larger, more modern buildings. The number of birds on-site will now double from 210,000 to 447,000.

Residents had lodged objections, stating that there would be increased truck movements. One protester had calculated that there could be more than 700 extra movements a year.

But the local authority has allowed the expansion as it conforms to all aspects of the local plan, will not cause harm to the environment and will bring economic benefits to the area.
