FUW president calls for modern-day ‘Robin Hood’ to help farmers

The Farmers Union of Wales says the dairy industry needs a modern-day Robin Hood to tackle the supermarkets.

“The government should set up a new watchdog to act like the legendry outlaw, not to steal from the rich supermarkets, but to ensure fair play and for everyone in the food chain,” said Gareth Vaughan, FUW president.

Speaking at the Welsh Dairy Show in Carmarthen, he insisted that farmers were businessmen and did not complain about companies making healthy profits.

But it was incredibly unfair that major food industry players sought ever increasing profits leading to small businesses at the bottom of the supply chain ladders being squeezed.
