Grant scheme gives biomass market a boost

England’s fledgling biomass market has been given a helping hand with the launch of a capital grant scheme from Defra.

The 5 year scheme, expected to be worth about £10-15m in England over the next two years, will support biomass-fuelled heat and power projects in industrial, commercial and community sectors.

Projects can apply to receive between £25,000 and £1m from the Biomass Capital Grant Scheme.

One of the main recommendations of the Biomass Task Force, the grants will help recover up to 40% of the difference in cost compared with the installation of a fossil fuel system.

Paul Temple, NFU vice president, welcomed the scheme and said farmers were in a good position to produce for the biomass market.

“A scheme such as this to develop the biomass market is a welcome step in the right direction for farmers,” he said.

Application forms and conditions for applying for a grant are available on the AEA Energy and Environment website.
