Jobs cut at butchery and abattoir firm Vion

Butchery and abattoir company Vion has announced it will cut 820 jobs under plans to restructure part of its business.

The Dutch company will lose 470 jobs at its Haverhill site in Suffolk, plus 200 jobs at Malton in North Yorkshire.

A further 150 poisitons will be axed at Cambusland in Scotland following the loss of its contract to supply food products to retailer Marks & Spencer.

The company said the other losses were a result of plans to close its abattoir, butchery and parts of its retail operations and transfer them to Malton.

At the same time its cooked meat production will move from Malton to Haverhill.

Vion said it had conducted an extensive review of its UK operations due to increased market competition.
