Jump in lamb numbers weighs on trade

Rhayader Auction Market, Powys: Prices dropped sharply at Tuesday’s (31 May) sale, with more numbers forward than usual for the time of year.

More than 500 lambs went under the hammer, to average 221p/kg. Super light lambs commanded the best trade, averaging 233p/kg, with a top price of 237p/kg paid for a 27kg lamb. Top price per head was £94 for a 42.5kg lamb – almost £10 down on the week.

“It’s unusual to have big numbers at this time of the year because Rhayader is up in the hills,” said Brightwells auctioneer Chris Davies. “People are selling earlier this year to take advantage of the trade, with a lot of 25-35kg lambs forward.” Cull ewes averaged £55.35 a head, and peaked at £74.
