Lots of interest for Marlain Holsteins

Two bids of 2500gns and three others at 2000gns and over showed the depth of interest in the Marlain Holstein herd when it was dispersed for Staffs dairy farmers Mark and Elaine Gadsden last week.

The 2001-bred Marlain Leduc Julia was first at 2500gns.

Giving 40kg on the day, she is out of an 11,960kg Storm cow and had given 9100kg as a heifer.

She in-calf to Comestar Lheros and was taken by T Smith & Sons for their Bumblebee herd at Hinckley, Leics.

A young freshly-calved Outside cow from the Corinne family matched the bid.

After a second lactation of 10,300kg she was giving 58kg on the day and joins the Summerfield herd of Paddocks Farm.

The well-bred third calver Newroddige Jed Sonya (VG87) made 2400gns.

She is out of a twice-10,000kg Slocum dam and traces back to the 17,500gns Impala TTR Sonya through a sire stack that includes Starbuck, Triple Threat, Elevation and Ivanhoe.

She goes to J R Williamson & Co’s Wardle herd.

Marlain Igniter Janine, who was due with her second next month to Talent, made 2200gns to Betholt Ltd, Staffs, while T Smith & Sons were in again at 2000gns to take a smart October-calved heifer by Morty.

The Smiths took another four lots at 1900gns, 1500gns twice and 1450gns.

Averages: 59 cows and heifers in-milk 1228, eight in-calf heifers 1009 and 12 maiden heifers 873.
