Milk production during November was the lowest for 34 years, according to latest Rural Payments Agency figures.
Last month’s UK wholesale milk deliveries totalled 982.2m litres, 31.8m litres below the same time last year and 40m litres above the 941m litre-low hit in November 1974.
Cumulative production for 2008/09 now stands at 8,635m litres, 229m litres down on November 2007.
“It’s a harsh reminder of the pressures and lack of confidence on dairy farms at the moment,” NFU chief dairy adviser Hayley Campbell-Gibbons commented. “Everyone in the supply chain must now play their part to help reverse this trend.”
