Pig breeds meet consumer demand

MARKS & SPENCER now sources all its fresh pork and British bacon ranges for its UK stores from the north-east of Scotland.

The partnership between the retailer and Grampian Country Pork, centred on Grampian‘s processing plant in Broxburn near Edinburgh, relies on new breeds of pig to bring customers a supply of consistent pigmeat.

Paul Willgoss, head of agriculture at M&S, said that had been achieved using unique genetics to deliver optimum eating quality and new approaches to welfare and pig husbandry.

By introducing the new pig crosses Mr Willgoss said he was confident of being able to encourage other farmers to adopt the new farming practices, where finishing pigs are kept on fresh straw and all breeding sows are kept outdoors.
