Pig prices ease again

The GB Deadweight Adjusted Pig Price took another downward step for pig supplies week commencing Oct 31 and is quoted at 101.86p.

As a result, contract base prices also eased but spot prices generally held firm.

Reports of EU pigmeat price rises in Holland and Denmark and a relatively firm euro (67.9p on Mon) has also helped to put a bottom in the market.

Spot bacon bids for the start of the week have been in the 101–104p/kg range but some buyers looking to fill empty spaces later in the week have lifted their bids to 106p.

Cull sow prices have also moved marginally firmer with most buyers bidding in the 73–75p/kg range.

Cull prices are still 10p/kg behind their value a year ago when strong demand from the Russian market lifted manufacturing grade pigmeat values across Europe.

Weaner quotes have continued to ease with the Meat and Livestock Commission 30kg average now quoted at £33.77/head ex farm reflecting the indifferent outlook for finished pig prices in three months’ time.
