Pig prices hold for now
UK PIGMEAT prices continue to reflect the relative strength of EU values.
Although the GB Euro DAPP has eased slightly this week to 105.46p/kg, most spot and contract prices are quoted at similar levels.
Spot bacon buyers are offering 106-109p/kg for deliveries the week commencing Aug 21, with lighter weights worth a modest 2-4p/kg above this.
The European mainland average is currently quoted at €1.43 (97p/kg) up from €1.30 (88p/kg) in early May.
Recent falls in the value of the euro will however let in cheaper imports and put pressure on domestic pigmeat prices.
The euro opened on Aug 22 at 67.8p, compared with 69p two weeks ago.
Despite this demand for cull sows remain firm with most export quotes at 76-79p/kg and numbers still tight.
A combination of short supplies and a good outlook for finished pig prices this autumn has helped the weaner market to remain positive.
The Meat and Livestock Commission 30kg average of ÂŁ34.97/head ex-farm is up by 10% compared with 12 months earlier.
