A lively trade for pedigree and crossing sires meant a new breed record at the South Devon Herd Book Society’s spring show and sale at Exeter, when a polled bull from the Colcharton herd realised 6200gns.
Beating the last highest price of 5600gns (set in 1989), Z Colcharton Demetrius was the only bull entered by John and Colin Edwards who follow a polling policy in their herd near Tavistock.
Demetrius, who had been out-wintered, was by Upper Norton Demetrius – a bull that had the highest frame score at the same sale in 2003.
He is out of a cow from the herd’s successful Tulip family.
Demetrius was bought by fellow poll enthusiasts John and Jean Hadley, who run the Hadley herd at Chesterton, Warkwickshire.
There was plenty of interest in polled bulls which produced another spate of lively bidding for leading breeder Richard Harvey’s Z Sexton Poll Ace 2nd.
From his herd at Ivybridge, Devon, Ace 2nd is by the easy-calving sire Cholwells Poll Ace 13th.
He was male champion at Kingsbridge Show last year and is out of a cow by the show-winning bull Sexton Hermes 2nd.
Poll Ace 2nd made 4400gns to Brian Kingham who runs Kingham Farms at Aldbourne, Wiltshire.
He also gave 3900gns for the Highgate Farm Partnership’s Highgate Hayden 12th, consigned by Cornwall farmers Oliver and Ian Rounsevell.
Hayden 12th, who stood champion under judge Roger Clemens from Wadebridge, was a show winner last year.
He is by Highgate Hamish – breed champion at the Royal Show 2000 – and out of a dam by Juniper Statesman.
Hayden 12th has a Beef Index of +17.
Leading the females at 975gns was a maiden heifer by Stretchford Hercules from Peter Hickman’s Baddaford herd at Ashburton, Devon.
Buyer was A Watkins of Herefordshire.
The female championship went to the maiden heifer Waddeton Mona 20th from breeders H Tully & Sons of Brixham.
She realised 925gns to J Hopkins, Lympsham, Somerset.
Averages: 26 bulls 2274 and females £804. (Kivells)
