Ringside: Crowds descend on Bishops Castle store cattle sale

A much larger entry of 693 cattle was presented at the Annual Prize Sale of store cattle last week (22 April), with a large crowd producing an excellent trade throughout. B Williams’ British Blue claimed the champion steer prize, with WS Turner & Sons’ Simmental taking the heifer championship.
Overall, steers averaged 178p/kg and £830 a head, with Limousins claiming the highs of £1160 and 254p/kg. Heifers averaged 165p/kg and £650 a head, selling up to £935 for a Limousin and 216p/kg for a Charolais.
Charolais steers sold to a top of 226p/kg, as did British Blues. Charolais heifers reached £780 a head, with Simmentals topping at £810. Limousin heifers sold to 203p/kg and British Blues to 211p/kg.
