Ringside: steady trade at Salisbury Livestock Market

A small cattle entry led to steady trade on Tuesday (14 January), with barren Belted Galloways selling to 120p/kg and Black and Whites 119.5p.
Leaner steaking dairy cows were in stronger demand, leading to an overall average of 101.35p/kg. Cattle over 30-months sold to 180.5p/kg for a Charolais cross steer, while heifers averaged 143.97p.
Quality of prime finished stock was mixed, but buyers paid a good premium for the best shaped, well-finished animals, leading to a top price of 207p/kg for an Angus cross steer. Overall, steers averaged 176.72p/kg, with heifers levelling at 184.89p and peaking at 191.5p.
Hogget prices eased by about 6p/kg on the week, with standard weights matching lightweights at a top of 181.7p/kg.
