Sarkley herd draws buyers to Carlisle

ANOTHER TEMPTING selection of youngstock from the Pennie family”s Sarkley herd was snapped up by north country buyers who paid up to 7100gns for one of the many French-sired young bulls offered at last weekend”s Carlisle fixture.

Top call for this mid-Wales based herd came for the nine-month-old Sarkley Valiant, an A1-bred bull by the Jacot son Rocky and out of an Uplands Batman dam. With muscle and style to spare, he looked a great prospect and stays in Cumbria with buyer B Hall.

Lake District beef producer Keith Harryman from Keswick teamed up with G Wilson from Carlisle to pay 4600gns for the 11-month-old bull calf Sarkley Volt. This son of the Lascard-sired Goldies Oswald is out of a Broadmeadows Cannon dam and traces back to the noted brood cow Sarkley Arianne, whose grandsons have sold to 23,000gns.

Next in the ring and boasting a beef value of 31 was Sarkley Volvo. Taken at 3800gns by W Barron, Co Durham, this massive 11-month-old bull brings in new blood through his French sire Ionesco. Volvo is out of a Cloughhead Charlie dam that has already bred a 5800gns son.

And the Hodgson family from Rydal invested 3500gns in the April-born calf Sarkley Vittorio (beef value 20). He is by Goldies Oswald with a female line combining Ronick Gains and Cannon.

Averages: 29 bull calves 1832 and 27 heifer calves 1583 (Harrison and Hetherington).
