Smoke not a food hazard

The Food Standards Agency has said it has no immediate concerns about food and milk produced close to the scene of the Hemel Hempstead oil depot fire.

The agency issued a statement on Monday (12 December) after some press reports suggested that polluted rain could bring milk production in the south east to a halt.

“At this stage, there is no reason to believe that milk production will be affected, particularly as dairy herds are mainly kept indoors at this time of year and would not be grazing outside,” said the FSA.

It added that there should be no problems with any vegetables or fruit affected by smoke from the fire if they were properly cleaned and peeled.
