Thrunton Charolais tops society fixture

The Thrunton Charolais herd of the Campbell family at Alnwick, Northumberland, took the biggest returns at the latest breed society fixture at Carlisle when their bull Thrunton Vendor made 3800gns.

Ian, John and father Colin Campbell were on hand to see this bull achieve even greater fame for his sire, the 24,000gns Perth bull Mowbraypark Orlando.

Vendor is out of a cow by Haymount Jetstream and has a Beef Value of 32, giving him a top 10% ranking.

He goes to Lockerbie with A J MacGregor.

The De Crespigny herd achieved big success in its heyday for Mr and Mrs Guy Lyster.

And breeder Esmor Evans cashed in on some of the best of that breeding with a smart son of De Crespigny Dunkirk, who is out of the top-rated cow De Crespigny Tombola.

Mr Evans’ Maerdy Varela, from his herd in Flintshire, North Wales, is out of a Maerdy Grimaldi dam and goes to Lancashire farmer W Holloway at Preston.

Making the long trip from Camborne, Cornwall, was breeder K Williams.

He paid the day’s top female price of 1700gns for Hunsonby Valerie from Cumbria vendors J and T Holliday.

This five-year-old daughter of Killadeas Jack was suckling a March-born heifer calf by the good producer Doonally New.

A two-year-old maiden heifer from Mr Evans – by Maerdy Sinndar – also realised 1700gns to W and B Nichol of Roxburghshire.

Averages: Eight bulls £2086, eight females £958 and six Maerdy heifers £1120.
