Uplands ELS survey gives participants chance to have their say

Around 1000 farmers in severely disadvantaged areas will be surveyed by telephone in the second half of January on the impact and effectiveness of the Uplands Entry Level Stewardship Scheme, which opened in July last year.

The survey, commissioned by DEFRA for Natural England, will be led by Will Manley, director of countryside and rural economy research at the Royal Agricultural College.

The challenge was to gain an early understanding of how effective the scheme had been in terms of its environmental objectives, to assess where there had been problems and how it could be improved, said Mr Manley.
