Welsh red meat boost with £12m investment

The Welsh red meat industry has been given a boost with a £12m investment.

Dunbia’s facility at Llanybydder has been kitted out with state-of-the-art equipment allowing for more efficient processing systems, including an innovative deboning method.

The Welsh government provided the company with a £2.71m Single Investment Fund grant towards the cost of improving the facilities.

Hybu Cig Cymru described Dunbia’s facilities investment as “excellent news” for the entire Welsh red meat industry.

“This major investment by Dunbia is a clear demonstration of the faith they have in Welsh farmers and the quality of their livestock,” said HCC chief executive Gwyn Howells.

“It proves that here in Wales we have high standards throughout the supply chain to ensure our meat is recognised as a quality product around the world.”

HCC and Dunbia worked together to market Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef branded meat and have contracts with Canada, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal and Italy.

The facility processes 1.5 million lambs a year and employs 600 people.
