Western Holstein Club’s 6000gns start to New Year

A sensational start to the New Year’s dairy cattle trading produced a top price of 6000gns at the Western Holstein Club’s show and sale at Beeston Castle, Cheshire.

Actonfarm Jordan Beatexus 2nd started the day by taking the championship under judge John Stevenson, and ringsiders acknowledged her as one of the best calved heifers seen at this fixture for some time.

Buyers were J R Williamson & Partners, Wardle, Cheshire.

Consigned from the Nantwich herd of H J Tomlinson and Partners, this Roylane Jordan daughter calved in late November and was giving 35.4kg at 4.04% fat on the day.

She is bred from seven successive generations of Excellent dams and is out of the three times 11,000kg-plus Iv-Ann Mark Tesk cow, Actonfarm IV Ann Beatexus 2nd.

The family was founded at Actonfarm with the 1994 purchase of Mileoak Vanguard Beatexus 3rd, bought at the Grosvenor herd sale for 4900gns as a calved heifer.

The heifer goes back to the great Ullswater Beatexus family and has the 11,800kg Vallumfarm Beatexus 11th as third dam.

She combines a sire stack of breed greats including Warden and Ullswater Royal Sovereign.

Vendor John Tomlinson said: “We’ve got 17 Beatexus females in the herd and have five Picston Shottle heifer calves out of Beatexus dams including one out of the 6000gns heifer, so it’s a good start to the year.”

The 52 calved heifers ended the day at an average of 1114, sustaining last year’s firm demand.

Under-bidder for the day’s top-priced heifer was Herefordshire’s Peter Andrews, who had earlier paid 2100gns for R B Jones & Sons’ calved heifer Leamoll Encore Peach 2nd.

By the Marcrest Encore son Cleevale Encore Disirabull, she is out of a VG87 dam by Mandel with three yields over 10,000kg.

Ray Brown and Partners, Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, led the cow trade with a 1400gns call from Market Drayton milk producer Rob Swaine for Bidlea Figaro Tory.

This third calver by Eastland Figaro had given 10,213kg with her second.

Averages: 14 cows 969 and 52 heifers 1114. (Wright Manley)
