Wet weather forces vegetable supplier into administration

Southwest potato and vegetable merchant W.J. Oliver & Son has gone into administration, it has been announced.

The firm, which supplies fresh organic vegetables throughout Devon and Cornwall, said it had suffered two difficult years of trading, with price pressure from its customers. The trouble was compounded this year by the wet summer which prevented the company from being able to harvest growing crops.

Olivers has a grower base covering 300 acres and currently employs 20 staff. Plymouth-based Gilbert Lemon and Ian Walker have been appointed as joint receivers and they said the firm would continue trading in the short-term in order to harvest remaining crops and explore potential for a sale of all or part of the business.
