YFC 2009: Young Farmers launch nationwide survey

The NFYFC has launched a nationwide survey of its members’ hopes, plans and concerns.

The initiative, run in conjunction with LANTRA, aims to get young men and women to share their concerns about the issues and barriers facing young people looking to enter the agricultural industry.

The survey is open to all 20,000-plus members – and the results will inform industry leaders and policy makers.

It follows a small-scale survey in 2007, which the NFYFC ran with the National Trust.

That highlighted the degree to which members were focused on the need for sound business principles to underpin their farming ambitions, with “profitable” and “thriving” among the words most frequently chosen to describe how they would like their farm (or the one on which they work) to look in 10 years’ time.

A high percentage in the 2007 survey also emphasised the words “enjoyable” and “family”, suggesting that farming remains a vocation for many, rather than simply a business proposition.

Keep an eye on the NFYFC website for the survey to appear.
