YFC charity cyclists roll into Blackpool

Two groups of young farmers have raised thousands for charity by pedalling their way to Blackpool, Lancashire, for the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs AGM.

Wrong turns, close shaves and flat tyres were all worth it as Worcestershire and Devon Young Farmers’ Clubs arrived in style and in plenty of time for the highly anticipated weekend on Friday (May 3).

Worcestershire Young Farmers’ Club’s county chairman Helen Harcombe and a team of 16 other members set off from Blackpole on Tuesday (30 April) covering more than 200 miles before arriving “exhausted” but excited on Friday afternoon.

“It’s been a long trip but everyone has really enjoyed it and it’s for a fantastic cause,” said Helen, who along with her team hope to raise £10,000 in aid of two charities – Cancer Research UK and Worcester Samaritans.

Route planner Phil Maiden led the way and despite the odd hiccup navigated the team to Blackpool’s famour tower.

“I’m glad we’re here now. I think we’re all exhausted and the last leg of the trip took it out of us especially, but we’re looking forward to fantastic weekend.”

Meanwhile, a team of five from Devon Young Farmers’ Club, set off on Monday (29 April) covering more than a 100 miles a day, arriving on Wednesday afternoon ready for the weekend.

Having raised more than £4,000 for Parkinson’s UK and the Devon club’s new building fund, Paul Glanvill said he was delighted to have arrived and was “buzzing” for the weekend.

“It was a great journey up and we’re actually feeling fairly fresh today. We actually met up with a few other clubs on the way and are looking forward to seeing everyone else over the weekend,” he added.

The team of five were aided by a support vehicle driven by Jon Lee who provided navigation and break down cover. You can still sponsor Worcestershire Young Farmers’ Club by visiting https://mydonate.bt.com/teams/wfyfc or if you’d like to sponsor the Devon crew, ring Paul on 07929 982 868.
