Flood warnings widespread across country

Dozens of flood warnings are in force across England and Wales as heavy rain continues to threaten much of the country.

The Environment Agency is warning of flood risks on larger and slower-responding rivers and also more generally for parts of south-west England.

Some 31 flood warnings were in force at 10.40am on Monday (30 April) in the South West, East Anglia, the Midlands and north-east England.

Flooding is expected with immediate action required, said the agency.

A further 144 flood alerts are also in place, extending the area of concern to include south-east England and Wales.

Flooding was possible in these areas and people should be prepared, the agency said.

A low risk of minor disruption from localised flooding will continue into Tuesday (1 May) for parts of southern and eastern England, the south Midlands and south Wales.
