Food team successfully scale Kilimanjaro

One-time NFU director general Richard Macdonald is among a team of 10 senior UK food executives who have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the charity FARM-Africa.

The team set out from Kibo Huts (4,700m above sea level) last Thursday (UK time) and reached the peak early on 30 September.

Their triumphant ascent followed a 1,200m climb in sub-zero temperatures and in oxygen-thin air. They were forced to endure driving hail and the penultimate part of the climb required the climbers to scramble up loose volcanic scree to reach the crater at Gilman’s Point (5,700m above sea level).

From there they made a final push up to the summit at Uhuru Peak, a dizzying 5,896m above sea level.

The UK food sector executives came together to raise funds and awareness for African farmers, a crucial part of the global supply chain.

The challenge is in aid of FARM-Africa, a charity that works at grassroots level to ensure that more and more families in eastern Africa have food on the table.

“FARM-Africa is incredibly proud of the expedition team’s achievement,” said Nigel Harris, CEO of FARM-Africa.

“Their triumph is a powerful demonstration of the UK food sector’s fantastic support for African farmers, who are a vital part of the global food supply chain. And what a fantastic team effort in training and taking on this epic journey to help raise awareness for the communities we work with.”
