The 10,572 store lambs saw an abundance of buyers and met solid trade, but buyers spent cautiously and selectively at Hartington last Wednesday (3 September).
While returns were not always in line with vendors expectations, store lambs to £63 and an overall average for the day of £54.56 reflected realistic ambitions in what might prove to be a difficult season.
The most popular items on sale were the Suffolk x Mule ewe lambs hitting £83 with numerous pens in the £70’s.
Clearly short-keep store lambs were harder work than the smaller long-keep sorts, which found a ready sale around the £50 mark.
Averages: Suffolk cross store lambs, £53.34; Texel cross store lambs, £53.30; Charollais cross store lambs, £48.32; Mule wether, £45; Suffolk cross ewe lambs, £64.93; Texel cross ewe lambs, £54.
