Balmoral Show 2012: Texel shearling ewe reigns supreme
The overall sheep interbreed champion title was awarded to a Texel shearling ewe (pictured above) which also scooped the shortwool championship, at Balmoral today.
This homebred ewe is from Mr Alastair Gault’s flock in Newtownavvey, Antrim. By Duncrayne Ringmaster and out of a homebred ewe by Dougan Hill McFly, this was her first outing. Mr Gault is no stranger to showing and keeps 40 Texels and 20 Suffolks.
After today’s win, she will go on to all the summer shows in Northern Ireland.
In reserve was today’s reserve shortwool champion, a Charollais ewe (pictured above) from Mrs Diane Christie’s flock in Comber, Newtownards, Co Down. She was bred by Ian Craig who keeps the Ballynoe House flock – she is by Kingsland Highflyer and out of a Castellau Formidable daughter. The Christies bought her at Dungannon as a ewe lamb and she won Charollais champion and interbreed overall champion at last year’s show.
In the longwool championships, the title of champion went to a Blackface ewe from Mr Rodger Crawford, and the reserve went to a Bluefaced Leicester ewe from Julie Loughery.
The judge for the interbreed championships was Mr Archie McGregor from the Allanfauld flock in Kilsyth.
