Beef Expo 2013: Supreme championship

The heifer champion Temptation, from TA and LC Lyon and son, took the overall championship in what was a tightly fought contest under the day’s Judge Elfed Williams, from Brecon, Powys.

Mr Williams said the heifer was “a real star”, adding: “She is a well balanced animal. She has width, a good second thigh and is fantastic over the plates; full right through and most of all [she is] showy with it.”

This January 2012 born 564kg heifer was put forward by Jonathan Lyon. She is out of a Limousin cross dam from the Thirwell Castle Herd and by Rossignal.

Earlier in the day she had been placed above Mr AD Bishop’s reserve 574kg British Blue cross x British Blue, Black Beauty in the continental heifer championship.

A landscape gardener by trade, Mr Lyon, Lintre House, Thurlby, has been showing for five years and describes breeding show calves as “a hobby”. However he has already had a run of successes with Temptation including a win at Smithfield and home-bred champion at Newark.

Temptation will be heading to the Hertfordshire show next and will then return home to TA and LC Lyon and Son’s 40 cow herd of Limousins and British Blues in Lincolnshire.

Taking the overall reserve championship was Andrew Bishop with his British Blue cross heifer Black Beauty.
