Beef Shorthorns peak at 7,000gns at Carlisle

Beef Shorthorn bulls sold to a top 7,000gns at the society’s official spring sale, Carlisle, last week (22 May).

Sale leader was the male champion, Gilven Guardsman TI +28, SRI +21, a two-year-old dark roan by the 4,000gns Glenisla Zetor and out of a Bilsdale bred dam. Bred and exhibited by RS and G Johnson, Huby, York, he sold to Neil and Graeme Massie, Aboyne, Aberdeen.

Next at 4,500gns was the reserve male champion, Castlemount Homer TI +18, SRI +16, a two-year-old roan Kilfrush Roulette son, out of a Craigfaddock dam from D McDowell, Newtownards, County Down. Buyer was WS Brownrigg, Millbeck, Keswick.

A bid of 4,000gns secured Aberdona Greengrass TI +14, SRI +13 for S and J Redpath, Alyth, Blairgowrie. This 23-month-old light roan was by Millerston Dolomite and out of a Wavendon dam from R and C Rettie, Alloa.

Heading female trade at 4,800gns was the two-year-old roan, Oakleigh Gabriella, a Blelack Masterpiece daughter, out of an Endeavour bred dam from Peter Turnbull’s 20-cow herd, Kildale, Whitby. She sold to RJ Baudains, Nunnington, York.

Mr Baudains also invested 2,700gns in the reserve female champion, Oakleigh Lovely Gina, another two year old by Masterpiece.

The day’s second highest female at 4,000gns was Podehole Joyful Gossip TI +0, SRI +3, a two-year-old roan heifer by Trojan of Craigeassie. She sold in calf to the 10,500gns Millerston Fine Idea.  Bred and exhibited by Charles and Sally Horrell, Thorney, Peterborough, she sold to Rumsden, Jarvis Brook, Crowborough.

A bid of 3,600gns secured the roan Podehole Irene Gracious TI +7, SRI +9 for AC Farms, Langham, Rutland who took home three more Podehole entries. They purchased the white Podehole Gypsy Gleam TI +1, SRI +4 for 3,200gns; the red Podehole Broadhooks Gladys TI +13, SRI +13 by the 11,000gns Chapelton Clansman for 3,100gns, and the roan Podehole Hermione Gina TI +9, SRI +12 a Craigeassie daughter for 3,000gns.

Donald Biggar, Castle Douglas offered his highest female entry at 3,700gns to AS and CJL Hodgson, Glenridding, Penrith. Chapelton Pixie TI +22, SRI +19 was a white two year old by the 6,800gns Glenisla Banqo and sold in calf to Crichton Paddy.

The Hodgsons also paid 3,300gns for Mr Biggar’s Chapelton Veronica TI +16, SRI +12, a two-year-old white Chapelton Typhoon daughter in calf to Paddy.

The day’s second 3,100gns call was made by Yester Farm Beef, Haddington for Sandwick Patience Harrietta TI +20, SRI +19, a 16-month-old red and white by Redhill Challenger from Andrew and Caroline Ivinson, Ousby, Penrith.

Averages: 21 bulls £2,592.50; 10 maiden heifers £2,609.25; four cows and heifers served and/or suckling £2,441.25; 32 served heifers £2,272.27. Ballard: 9 maiden heifers £1,767.50; Wells: 8 maiden heifers £1,571.06.
